Automatic max & min Pell pathways

When AGI versus the poverty guideline decides your Pell - not the SAI.

Beyond the SAI formula, the FAFSA grants the maximum Pell Grant ($7,395) automatically when family AGI is at or below a multiple of the poverty guideline - 2.25x for a single parent/independent and 1.75x otherwise - or when the relevant party is a non-filer. A separate set of higher multiples grants the minimum Pell ($740). These pathways use the prior-prior-year (2024) HHS poverty guidelines and can override the calculated SAI.

"AGI" here is adjusted gross income plus any foreign income exclusion. The poverty guideline is the 2024 figure for your household size and state group.

How it interacts with the SAI

If you qualify for automatic max Pell, your SAI is set to zero (or kept negative if the formula already produced one), so you also rank highest for other need-based aid. If you don't qualify automatically, the standard SAI-to-Pell calculation applies. Estimate your own with the Pell calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the automatic-max Pell pathway?

If your family's AGI is at or below a multiple of the poverty guideline for your household size and state - 2.25x for single parents, 1.75x otherwise - you automatically receive the maximum Pell Grant of $7,395, regardless of the calculated SAI. Non-filers also qualify automatically.

What is automatic-zero or negative SAI?

Students on the automatic-max pathway are assigned an SAI of zero (or kept at a negative calculated value); non-filers eligible for max Pell are assigned -$1,500 outright. Either way they get the maximum Pell.

Which poverty guidelines does 2026-27 use?

The 2026-27 award year uses the prior-prior-year (2024) HHS Poverty Guidelines. The threshold is the guideline for your household size and state group, multiplied by the percentage for your filing/dependency situation, rounded to the nearest dollar.
